Homework:

1.   Finish reading Chapter 10 (79-88) with Active Reading post its with a focus on a central idea for the chapter. Answer packet questions as well.

2.   Complete Chapter 10 handout.

I.             Do Now:  Please take out your post it notes (Active Reading) for chapter 10 with packet questions and your book.

  

II.          Chapters 10-Personal Response in your notebook:

1.   “So I couldn’t bring myself to be completely happy.  It was much easier to be sad than to go back and forth between emotions, and this gave me the determination I needed to keep moving.  I was never disappointed, since I always expected the worst to happen.” (p69)  Do you agree with his mindset?  Why or why not?

2.   Ishmael goes to the water and dives in to get away from him problems.  Where do you go when you are upset or stressed?  How does this help?

3.   Traditions (like story telling) and family (pgs 71-72 , 75-76) are a big focus for Ishmael in his memoir.  What does he recall about his family in this chapter?  Or tell about Musa’s Bra Spider story (74-75).

4.   Be prepared to discuss one of your post it notes from 10 so far (share).

3-      Reread the paragraph on page 81 starting with “Sometimes night has a way….”  Write five TONE words and five MOOD words.  Remember:  tone =The author’s attitude, stated or implied, toward a subject. Some possible attitudes are pessimism, optimism, earnestness, seriousness, bitterness, humorous, and joyful.  Mood=  How it makes the reader or viewer FEEL.
